SEMINARIUM 04.04.2023 2 ENG

Abstract of the Archaeological Seminar, April 4 2023:

Almost all Christian buildings known from the Gulf region and dated to the 7th-9th centuries were originally decorated with stucco. Were these decorations coherent in style and iconography or are the visual language and formal features of the Gulf stuccoes a conglomerate of various traditions and influences? What was the specificity of stucco production of the Islamic sites located within the same geographical area and dated to around the 9th-11th centuries? To what extent was Christian art of the region dependent on the Sasanian tradition and to what extent were stuccoes produced by Muslim communities of this region related to the mainstream of Abbasid stucco production? During the presentation, these and other questions will be discussed and collections of stucco from a number of early Islamic sites located in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, and Iran will be presented.

SEMINARIUM 15.02.2022 ENG

Archaeological Seminar IMPC PAS 28.02.2023, abstract:

During the lecture,  Joanna Popielska-Grzybowska (associate professor PhD, IMOC PAS) will discuss briefly her current and planned research on the Pyramid Texts with references to other ancient Egyptian religious texts. She will present the basics of the method used in her study against the background of other approaches. Consequently, she will consider and review her multilateral analysis formulated within the methodology developed in contemporary anthropological linguistics, focused on the “linguistic worldview” (Językowy Obraz Świata/JOS). JOS is fixed in language – in grammatical categories, lexis and phraseology, in common judgments expressing common ideas, as well as in beliefs, myths and rituals – interpretation of reality common within a certain group. This approach allows one to start from very detailed intra-textual analyses and elevate the problem of interpretation to the level of a comprehensive analysis of the concepts found in the formulae of the Pyramid Texts or other.
J. Popielska-Grzybowska will also delineate perspectives of her future work done in collaboration, in particular, ongoing attempts to outline the main thematic threads of the oldest religious texts.

The editors of Études et Travaux journal welcome paper proposals for the 36th volume (to be published in 2023). The updated deadline for submission of papers is 30th April 2023. Manuscripts dedicated to research on the Arabian Peninsula are particularly warmly invited to the thematic section planned in this issue. Nevertheless, the volume is also wide open for submissions covering the whole traditional scope of the journal, including ancient and early medieval cultures of the Mediterranean Basin, Near East and North Africa. We would appreciate confirmation of your intent to submit a paper proposal at your earliest convenience, since the size of the volume is limited.
