EGYPT – YESTERDAY AND TODAY
Ist edition entitled
Between Tradition and Modernity
which will be held in Brudziński’s Hall
(Kazimierzowski Palace of University of Warsaw)
on 27-28.11.2017
Egypt plays an important role in the Arabic world resulting from its location, and the history rich in deep cultural, religious and social transformations. Over centuries, the statehood of this country had developed and had been shaped since the pharoahs’ times until the creation of the modern Egyptian state. Besides, the changes included religious systems from ancient polytheism and Christianity to Islam in its different forms. Based on this mosaic, the modern state took its shape – a country full of contrasts whose society has been a fascinating subject for a long time for researchers of diverse specialisations .
In Egypt, defined by its inhabitants as umm id-dunya – ( ie. mother of world), tradition mixes with modernity at every step and this is the major issue we would wish to discuss at the conference. We invite orientalists, linguists, religious scholars, philosophers, political scientists, sociologists and ethnologists who academically deal with Egyptian society, language, culture and religion to participate in an interdisciplinary debate. Furthermore, we would willingly focus on cultural output (literature, music, film, etc.) reflecting Egyptian social and cultural reality. We are also open to discussion on the state of research within the above mentioned areas.
On one hand we would like to concentrate on modernity and its references to tradition, on the other however we do not reject research devoted to earlier stages of the history of Egypt and Egyptians. The prime objective of the conference is actually to stimulate an academic debate on Egypt and integrate scholars (Polish and possibly foreign in the future) dealing with issues related to Egypt.
All interested in an active participation in the conference are welcome to submit papers and listeners to take part in discussions with speakers.
