Our colleague, Kasper Hanus, MA, will give a lecture entitled "Wittfogel Revisited: Was Ancient Shan-Shan a Hydraulic State?" at the Department of Anthropology of the Harvard University (Tozzer Anthropology Building, Room 203) on Tuesday, 24th Sep. at 12 p.m. The lecture is a part of the Harvard Asian Archaeology Seminar cycle. 23rd Science Festival at the Palace of Jabłonna (22nd Sep. 2019, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.)


Employees of the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures PAS invite you to workshops which will be held during the 23rd Science Festival “Science with the Palace in the background” at the park and palace complex in Jabłonna. The workshops will introduce the visitors to the basics of Latin palaeography, secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs; the participants will also make textile belts with rigid heddles, and learn to make and decorate vessels. The workshops will be conducted by Joanna Popielska-Grzybowska, Roksana Hajduga and Monika Wesołowska.

On September 24, 2019 Stephen Epstein will deliver a special lecture entitled "Recent Images of North Korea in South Korean Popular Culture". The lecture will deal with how South Korean production are treating North Korea and whether North Korea is viewed as an evil in South Korea.

The lecture will start at 10.30 and will take place in the room no. 315 of the Staszic Palac.

Stephen Epstein (associate professor) is the Director of the Asian Studies Programme at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He has published widely on contemporary Korean society and literature and has also translated numerous works of Korean and Indonesian fiction.
