The Treasury of Thutmosis I at Karnak: Finds in the storerooms

North of the Amun district and east of the Month district in the wider area of Karnak North the Treasury House of Thutmosis I has been located. The site was excavated by the IFAO (Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale) from 1970–1978 and 1986-1992 under the direction of Jean Jacquet.

The treasury from the early 18th Dynasty cuts into earlier layers from the Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period, and later use of the site was also detected, so that a very long period of occupation from the Middle Kingdom to the Roman period could be established in the material culture.

After the excavations, a large part of the find material was deposited in storage rooms that had been built on the site in Karnak North. Due to recent investigations in the Month District, the IFAO, together with the University of Vienna, has been relocating the material since 2013 at the request of the Department of Antiquities. This work has provided the opportunity to review the inventories, and at the same time to create a digital photographic documentation of the finds.

Six volumes were published by 2012 by Jean Jacquet and his wife Helen Jacquet-Gordon, who worked on site until 2010, they present archaeological finds of various categories, such as statue fragments, the very finely worked relief fragments of the former decoration or a typology of the ceramic finds.

However, certain groups of finds have so far remained unpublished. The aim of the ongoing work is therefore to record the previously unpublished object groups, such as non-ceramic objects, and to record the inventories in a digital database and make them accessible online.

The lecture presents the history of the site and the construction of the treasury, illustrated with archaeological finds.
