Analyzing its evolving theological setting and ritual focus
The lecture will take place d. 25 November 2024 at 2 p.m.
in room no. 166 (1st floor), Staszic Palace, 72. Nowy Świat, Warsaw + online
The presentation will focus on the numerous alterations traceable in the wall paintings from the inner part of a cult building erected by Amenhotep III (14th century BCE) at Wadi es-Sebua in northern Nubia.
These unique paintings have been kept in the magazines of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (EMC) since their removal from the temple in 1964. Due to lack of information about this rescue operation and the submergence of the temple building, the knowledge about this important archaeological site had gradually declined over the years. During recent years the paintings have been investigated as part of a larger study by the Wadi es-Sebua Project, headed by the speaker. In this project we also worked at the reconstruction of the building phases of the temple and the setting up of a permanent exhibition of the paintings in a redesigned area of the EMC, opened in September 2023.
Our examination of the paintings by various multimodal imaging techniques revealed very complex sequences of paint layers in some parts of the walls. Varied segments of the decoration underwent numerous alterations at different points in time. The stratigraphy of the paint layers shall be presented and discussed as well as an interpretation of these modifications based upon their historical and religious setting.
